The Carl Sandburg College softball team landed three players on the All-Region IV Division II District B Team for their play this spring in helping the Chargers to a 32-26 overall mark and the program’s first-ever Arrowhead Conference title.

Sophomore pitcher/designated player Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) and freshman third baseman Emily Bloomer (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) were first-team selections, while freshman first baseman Lauryn Campbell (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) earned a spot on the second team.

A threat at the plate and in the circle, Benge threw a team-high 99 innings and led the Chargers’ pitching staff in wins with a 13-5 record. The righthander posted a 4.61 ERA and paced Sandburg with 47 strikeouts and a 1.52 WHIP. She walked just 13 batters in her 18 appearances.

At the dish, Benge led Sandburg with a 1.115 OPS after finishing second among Chargers in batting average (.403), on-base percentage (.470) and slugging percentage (.646). Benge’s .474 average with runners in scoring position was tops among Chargers batters. She ended the season with seven home runs, 37 RBIs and 34 runs scored in 164 plate appearances.

Bloomer posted a team-high .410 batting average and led the Chargers with 46 runs, 73 hits and 19 doubles. Her .472 mark with runners in scoring position trailed only Benge, and she finished third on the team in on-base percentage (.451), slugging (.567) and OPS (1.018). Bloomer popped three home runs and drove in 50 in 194 plate appearances in addition to sporting a .939 fielding percentage at the hot corner.

Campbell filled the role of cleanup hitter in fine fashion, leading Sandburg with 10 homers, 28 extra-base hits, 55 RBIs and a .658 slugging percentage over 191 plate appearances. The hard-hitting first baseman finished second to Benge with a 1.079 OPS, and she was fourth on the team in runs (39), batting (.384) and on-base percentage (.424).
